Web survey: How do Australians get their Christian news?

A web survey launched this week is designed to find out how Australian Christians know what’s happening in the Christian world.

“We read the newspaper, listen to the radio and watch television and the web to find out what’s happening in the secular world, but these outlets report little of what happens in the Christian scene in Australia or the world,” said survey author, Martin Johnson. “Anything these media report about Christianity is usually bad news or on the quirky side,” he said.

The web based survey asks respondents to nominate how they currently get their Christian news and then asks if this is their preferred method.

Religion News in the News

Religion is always in the news, but it hasn’t always been considered an important beat. In recent years that changed for the better, in part because editors and publishers learned that many conflicts around the world center around religion.

Many newspapers started carrying dedicated religion pages, or even entire sections.

Lately, though, religion reporters have found themselves fired or re-assigned to other beats. Traditional newspapers have lost countless subscribers who prefer reading the news online — as it happens. In addition, the economic crisis means papers have had to cut expenses across the board.

Unfortunately, many newspapers have not yet learned how to apply their knowledge and expertise to online versions of their publications.

Still, there is much religion news to be found online.

Religion News Report aims to help finding it a little easier.
